Concentration exercises

Having just read the PALE KING by David Foster Wallace, I have been thinking about concentration. Concentration is key element in learning, in being respectful, and in being efficient, things that have always been important to me. So I took a look around and found a couple of simple concentration exercises that I thought were good.

1. Focus on one thought and see how long you can hold it. Use a clock. Try for 10 days.

2. Sit still, absolutely still. Try for 5 minutes, then 10, then 15.

3. During the day, try to cultivate a relaxed, poised manner and eliminate fidgeting.

4. After reading for 20 minutes, write down a summary in as succinct a manner as possible. Capture the essence.

4.5. Read a sentence and then write it down word for word from memory. Then two sentences, then three.

5. Lay down and relax, focus on your pulse. Try to feel the blood pulse through you.
